This is the failure of Mamata government; Chief Justice angry over vandalism in hospital, hearing to be held in Calcutta HC

The Calcutta High Court on Friday heard the case of vandalism in the premises of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This incident happened on the night of 14th August. The hospital was vandalised during a protest organised against the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor.

According to a Live Law report, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court said that the court has listed the matter because it had received emails regarding the vandalism at the hospital. During the hearing, the Chief Justice strongly criticized the West Bengal government for the vandalism and called it a complete failure of the state machinery.

19 people arrested in case of vandalism
Kolkata Police on Friday said it has so far arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism and violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Officials said the arrested persons have been sent to police custody till August 22 by a city court.

The vandalism took place at midnight amid a protest by women against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the hospital. Several people, including some policemen, were injured during the incident.

The strike by junior doctors in government health centres and hospitals continued on Friday in protest against the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee.

The protesting doctors are demanding strict punishment for the culprits and increased security at the workplace. Opposition parties have accused the police of not taking appropriate action when there was vandalism and violence in the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said on Thursday evening that two floors of the hospital’s emergency ward were vandalised, medicines were looted and infrastructure and equipment were damaged.
